Experience sharing of project development: From 2008 Olympic “Water Cube” to EXPO 2010 Shanghai China “Sunny Valley” GZMW |

For a long time, GuangZhou MEAN WELL (GZMW) is paying close attention to the progress of related infrastructures built-up for 2008 Beijing Olympic. For outdoor electronic displays, MW has lots of business opportunities and experiences to support customer’s requirements. The Beijing National Aquatics Center, better known as its nickname Water Cube, is the most representative lighting project among MW group. After excellent co-work experience with the customer, MW has chance to keep “lighting” at “Expo Boulevard” in Expo 2010 Shanghai China. One of the important features of Water Cube is its fabulous architectural lighting. When we learn about this decorative lighting tender obtained by Shanghai GRANDAR Company, MW sales aggressively approached this key account. After discussing with their design director, we think that SP-320 should be a suitable solution for them because this series comply with the international safety standards and built-in active PFC function, which has the best performance/ cost ratio. Besides MEAN WELL, TDK-Lambda and one of the domestic vendors were also listed as the candidates of their supplier selection. This project has ever stuck for a while mainly due to the price issue, which couldn’t compete with the price offered by China domestic vendor. However, MW sales team never gives up!! As known, Olympic was held in Aug, during a very hot season. We found that Water Cube designed for swimming competition has a particular phenomenon needs to be noted. The interior temperature will be lower than the outdoor’s. In this case, power supply unit will be easily failure due to the humility. To secure the operation life and high reliability, MW released the moisture-proof treatment solution (conformal coating) to customer and voluntarily absorbed the cost by ourselves. In addition, SP-320 series belongs to one of MW’s standard power supplies, so that total 3,500 pcs of power units can be promptly delivered to customer per request. Eventually, this impressive proposal and satisfied sales service allowed MW to get this project successfully!! In Beijing Olympic opening ceremony dated 2008/08/08, we were very excited to see the Water Cube was shining with spectacle brightness and fabulous brilliants, and feel that it is really worthy to make such efforts on this project. All the MEAN WELL should be very proud of it!! Based on this successful cooperation, Shanghai GRANDAR Company was awarded by China government as the best lighting solution supplier. Fortunately, MW is their only one power supply vendor for Expo 2010 Shanghai “Sunny Valley” project. If you walk along by the Expo Boulevard and see the “sunny Valley”, don’t forget "MEAN WELL inside".

1. |
The Expo Boulevard: The Expo Boulevard with total 10,831m2 is the main entrance and transport center for the Expo sites, and will connect the Chinese Pavilion, the Theme Pavilion, the Performance Pavilion and Metro lines 7, 8, and 13. According to the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, 23 percent of the visitors will enter the sites through the Expo Boulevard every day. |
|
2. |
Sunny Valley: The Expo Boulevard has four floors, two above ground and two underground. The semi-open building has six innovative “Sunny Valleys”. Each of the valleys is themed on a natural resource (flame, woods, earth, water, metal and air). They symbolize the integration of nature and human technology. The glass “Sunny Valleys” are surrounded by semi-transparent film. Like flowers in bloom, they channel the light, air, sunshine, rainwater and many other natural elements into the underground space, adding romantic charm to the Expo Boulevard. |

Case Study — CHIMEI project experience sharing by George Yu / Mean Well Sales Manager |
|
In the winter of 2006, our sales was informed by distributor that CHIMEI, a leading TFT-LCD manufacturer, had plan to purchase a numerous of power supply applied to the burn-in equipments in order to fulfill the capacity expansion in China. We were told that the major competitor was TDK Lambda from Japan. With the confidence of MEAN WELL’s product quality and price advantage, our distributor made lots of efforts to find out the key person in CHIMEI. After successfully obtaining the specification, MEAN WELL immediately set up a CDM project team consists of sales, PM, RD and engineers. We had many discussions and meetings from spec review, proof-of-concept and customizing the drawing and position holes for customers. Five months later, distributor finally got the first formal order from CHIMEI in April of 2007. Till now, CHIEMEI project had contributed USD 3.75M to MEAN WELL’s sales turnovers and it was one of the most important projects in the past few years. There will be many opportunities for Mean Well to get involved with a big project like this; therefore, we are glad to share our experiences as below :
-
Mutual Trust It is difficult for distributors to handle CHIMEI project on its own due to the complexity of the issues and involvement of many technical professions. The MEAN WELL CDM team played an important role in this project. The information and communication such like : pricing strategy and profits sharing process were openly shared. The Mutual Trust built up between CHIMEI and MEAN WELL has improved the efficiency of this project and is the key to the success of this project.
-
Teamwork by specialization A close relationship between distributor and end user can not be substituted. Obtaining the correct information or news from CHIMEI not only replied on distributor’s efforts in building up a very close relationship with customer but also the good team work MEAN WELL provided. Therefore, CHIME’s expectation on different aspects from product, quality, pricing, delivery and post-service can be fulfilled.
In summary, the most important factor to make this project success is “TRUST” between distributor, end user and MEAN WELL. We share the same vision and let’s move forward towards the same direction.
